Cool Earth the charity that The Green Journey supports has just returned from launching a new
partnership with the Ashaninka community of Oviri.

Oviri lies between steep mountains along the Rio Tambo,a powerful river that joins the Urubamba to become the Ucayali and then the Amazon. This extends our Ashaninka Project to the north and adds 16,000 more acres to the forest shield – equivalent to 80 Battersea Parks.

The community’s 176 families have already formed the community association Iyari – which means sanctuary – to ensure the voice of Oviri is heard.  Leopoldo Chimanga Shumpate, Chief of Oviri,

“Thank you for supporting us to set up yari and incentivising us to conserve our forests. We don’t want to lose our forest, we want to preserve it. No towns, no roads, no cars – just trees!

Ashaninka community of Oviri.

During our stay Iyari, Cool Earth and the community members signed a Forest Protection Agreement. The agreement promises three things. The community commits to keeping their canopy intact. The community can choose how to spend Cool Earth funds as long as it benefits the community as a whole. And it commits Cool Earth to help boost the community’s income stream.

We’re tremendously excited to have added so much forest to our Ashaninka Project. Even more importantly, it secures the northerly extent of the neighbouring reserve. This would not have been possible without the fantastic backing of our supporters.

We can’t wait to keep you up to date with the latest news from our newest village partner in the coming months.
